Prior to 2014 many would have considered Russia and other Eastern European markets extremely lucrative and keys for commercial telematics penetration. However, in light of the economic and political situation many multinational FMPs are scaling down their activities and in some cases pulling out of these markets altogether. Compared to the Western European market, Eastern Europe is very immature; functionality in some cases is limited to track and trace and for the moment at least individual markets are too risky to enter. Although, at this point the overall picture in Eastern Europe is not necessarily positive, there are glimmers of hope. For example the Polish and Czech markets do represent good opportunities and once there is economic and political stability in Russia and Ukraine there is a potential market of over 8.5 million commercial vehicles for telematics providers to tap into.
